Age And The Bartender
The legal drinking age in the United States is 21. In most
states the legal age for serving beer and alcohol is also 21.
Some states like Texas, allow the serving of alcohol to be done
at age 18. There isn’t a maximum age for tending bar. As long as
you can get around and keep up, you should have no problem
keeping your job.
For years, the average bartender was in their early 20s. This
was most likely because most bartenders were college students
paying for their own college and living expenses. Or they were
young people in between jobs or still searching for “what they
want to be when they grow up”. Most of the mature bartenders
were either the bar owners or had drinking problems and found it
convenient to be in close proximity to alcohol. And there were
some that weren’t able to find anything better, so they settled
for tending bar until something better did come along.
Today that’s changing. As bartending is being recognized as a
legitimate profession, more men and women are choosing it as a
career. People don’t look down at a middle aged person when they
say they’re a bartender. That statement, a few years ago, would
have fairly screamed “loser”. But not today. Today bartending is
coming into its own.
Extreme or flair bartending has had a lot to do with the new
opinions of bartenders. Flair bartending has started being
viewed as a sport. And Americans do love their sports. So the
attitudes toward bartending in general had to change to allow
for the increased opinions toward the “sport” of flair
bartending.
Competition bartending has allowed even the non-competing
bartenders to enjoy the benefits of the publics increased
opinions of their chosen profession. No longer do people have to
find a “real” job just because society feels that bartending
isn’t a respectable profession for a grown up. Bartenders will
now be allowed to mature and allow their skills to mature along
with them. And every one will reap the benefits of the maturing
bartending profession.
