Bartender Or Mixologist?
There are bartending schools and then there are bartending
schools of mixology. There’s more to attending a bartending
school of mixology than just learning how to mix a good drink.
Just like there’s more to a school of pharmacology than learning
how to read a doctors handwriting. The courses in mixology take
bartending a little farther than just tending bar.
Sure, you learn how to mix drinks in a bartending school of
mixology, that’s kind of necessary. You learn about the
different types of liquors, the mixers that go with them, and
the garnishes that add the finishing touch. You learn all the
fancy names, the exotic drinks, the drinks that are served hot,
and the ones served with or without ice.
You learn the difference between “shaken” and “stirred”, “on the
rocks” or “straight up”.
You’ll become familiar with all the names and terms used
everyday in bars around the country.
You also learn about customer service. Learn how to make your
customers happy and how to increase your earning potential by
increasing your tips. You learn how to operate the bar
equipment, and there are even courses in ordering supplies,
inventory control and profit margins.
Those are standard courses offered in both types of schools. The
main difference between mixology and bartending is in the
beverages you serve. Mixology is more about creating new drinks
instead of just making the same ones everyone else serves. It’s
like the science of mixing drinks. It’s combining both alcoholic
and non-alcoholic beverages, with different flavors to create
new drinks for your customers to enjoy. Mixology takes
bartending to the next level.
A bartending school of mixology gives you the basic
understanding of what types of flavors are added by which
alcohol. It gives you the basis to start your own experiments in
the quest for the world’s newest favorite drink.
If you’re interested in beginning a career in bartending, but
think you may want more of a challenge, a bartending school of
mixology may be just what you’re looking for. And the world is
waiting for your creations.
